Flat Betting vs Martingale: Which Betting System Is Less Likely to Wreck You?

Nearly every betting system on Stake or Rainbet is a variation of two ideas: bet the same amount every time, or change your bet based on wins and losses. Comparing the two extremes, flat betting and the Martingale, tells you almost everything you need to know about protecting a bankroll.

Flat betting

You wager the same fixed amount on every round regardless of what just happened. It is boring, and that is the point. Your bankroll moves in proportion to the game’s actual variance, losing streaks cost you linearly, and you can never blow up in a single bad run. Flat betting does not beat the house edge, but it is the most predictable, survivable way to play.

Martingale

You double your bet after every loss so that one win recovers all previous losses plus a small profit. On paper it looks unbeatable. In reality it is the fastest way to lose everything. A run of losses, which is common and expected, forces your bet to double again and again until you either hit the table limit or run out of bankroll. When that happens, and it will, you lose a huge stake all at once. The rare small wins never make up for the occasional catastrophic loss.

• Flat: small, steady swings. Worst case is a slow bleed. You control your exposure.
• Martingale: long strings of small wins that lull you, then one streak that erases them all and then some.
• Both face the same house edge. Neither wins long term. But only one can ruin you in an afternoon.

The middle ground
